Stabilisation

Broadcast-quality video cameras may be a lot harder to lug around than camera-equipped smartphones, but they also pack more inertia, resulting in smoother handheld pans and tilts. Tiffen claims to have replicated that inertia for smartphone users, in its new Steadicam Volt motorized stabilizer.

GoPro's release of its long-awaited Karma drone didn't exactly go to plan, but customers can still get a taste of the drone's camera technology – albeit on the ground. The company has now begun sales of the Karma Grip, which is a handheld camera stabilizer much like competitor's DJI's Osmo.

Last year, DJI introduced the Osmo – a motor-stabilized rig that smooths out the shakes in handheld video footage. Now, it's unveiled the Osmo Mobile, which utilizes the user's smartphone instead of a DJI-supplied camera.

It was just last month that consumer drone manufacturer DJI extended its focus from the sky to the ground, by introducing the motor-stabilized Osmo action camera. Now, Yuneec has announced its new Typhoon ActionCam, which sounds like it could give the Osmo a run for its money.

Although the GoPro’s wide-angle lens already does a good job at smoothing footage out, some shakes do still make it through when shooting particularly "bumpy" activities. The Slick motorized stabilizing rig helps with those, plus it's waterproof.
-
Motorized actioncam stabilizing rigs are becoming increasingly common, although most of them are hand-held affairs. The GoPro-specific StabCam is a little different, however, in that it can be attached to any existing GoPro mount. As an added bonus, it can automatically track a moving subject.

Like the cameras on several other drones, the 4K/30fps unit on DJI's new Inspire 1 is gimbal-mounted. Now, DJI is planning on offering a handheld mount, which the Inspire 1's camera – gimbal and all – can be mounted on after being removed from the drone.
-
Camcorder and stills camera rigs can be complex, heavy and bulky affairs. Dutch inventor Mees Baayen has designed a modular camera rig system called the Ultra which breaks down into components that can be carried in a user's pockets.

One of the neat things about smartphones is the fact that when gadgets are designed to be used with them, those devices can make use of the phone's electronics instead of incorporating their own. The Elephant Steady is a new iPhone camera stabilizer, that takes this approach.

DJI is best-known for its Phantom line of quadcopters. One of its products, the ZenMuse, is a motorized gimbal designed to keep cameras steady and level when mounted beneath such aircraft. Now, that same tech is available for hand-held video cameras, in the form of the Ronin stabilizing rig.

Why don't we hear more about suspension systems for watercraft? Well, if the folks at Australia's Nauti-Craft have anything to say about it, we soon will. Their prototype 2Play catamaran incorporates an interlinked hydraulic suspension, that isolates the deck from the two hulls.

Late last year Tiffen began shipping its Steadicam Curve, a stabilizing rig for use with GoPro actioncams. We recently had the chance to try the Curve out for ourselves, to see how good it really is at smoothin' out the shakes.
